Accessible Care Initiative at The Pine Center

At The Pine Center, we believe meaningful mental health care should not be limited only to people who can afford higher private practice rates.

Our Accessible Care Initiative exists to help expand access to trauma-informed, relational therapy within our community while also supporting the development of emerging clinicians through high-quality training and supervision.

This program is built around our internship and clinical learning community, where graduate-level counseling interns provide therapy under ongoing supervision and mentorship from licensed clinicians.

Our why

We know that cost is one of the biggest barriers folks experience when accessing consistent therapy. We also know that many people seeking trauma-informed care, especially longer-term relational work, are often priced out of private practice settings.

At the same time, graduate clinicians need thoughtful, rigorous training environments that emphasize depth, ethics, relational care, and nervous system-informed practice.

Our Accessible Care Initiative was created to support both of these realities:

  • Increasing access to affirming, trauma-informed therapy in our community

  • Training future therapists in relational, ethical, and clinically grounded care

We see these goals as deeply connected.

What the program offers

Clients in the Accessible Care Initiative work with counseling interns who are completing advanced graduate training and receiving close supervision throughout their clinical work.

Intern clinicians at The Pine Center are supported through:

  • Ongoing individual and group supervision

  • Case consultation and mentorship

  • Training in trauma-informed and relational therapy approaches

  • Guidance around ethics, pacing, and nervous system-informed care

  • Collaborative support from licensed clinicians within the practice

  • Ongoing support through their school during consultation with peers, staff, and training instructors

Intern clinicians at The Pine Center do not work in isolation. Their work is supported through active supervision and consultation, which means clients benefit not only from their clinician's care, but from the guidance and clinical oversight built into the program.

We view this as a collaborative model that supports both strong clinical care and ethical therapist development.

This structure allows clients to access lower-cost therapy while still receiving thoughtful, supported care.

Our Approach to Training

We approach training with the same values that guide our clinical work: curiosity, relational safety, accountability, and depth.

We are intentional about creating a learning environment where emerging clinicians are encouraged to:

  • Think critically and relationally rather than relying on rigid treatment models

  • Understand symptoms in context, especially through trauma-informed and systemic lenses

  • Develop attunement, pacing, and nervous system awareness

  • Practice ethically, collaboratively, and with humility

  • Hold complexity rather than reducing people to diagnoses or symptom lists

We believe good therapy comes not only from knowledge, but from the ability to remain present, thoughtful, and relationally attuned.

Who may be a fit for this program

This program may be a good fit for individuals who:

  • Are seeking lower-cost therapy options

  • Want consistent, ongoing support but have financial limitations

  • Understand clinical interns may not be at our practice for the remainder of their career

  • Are open to working with a graduate-level intern clinician

  • Value relational, trauma-informed, and affirming care

  • Are looking for a slower, depth-oriented therapy process rather than short-term symptom management alone

Many clients find internship clinicians to be highly engaged, thoughtful, and deeply invested in the therapeutic process.

Who may not be the best fit for this program

While many people benefit from working with intern clinicians, this program may not be the right fit for everyone. We believe it’s important to be transparent about that so clients can make informed decisions about the kind of support they need.

This program may not be the best fit for individuals who:

  • Are looking for highly specialized or intensive treatment beyond the scope of a training setting

  • Prefer to work exclusively with a fully licensed clinician with many years of post-graduate experience

  • Need a level of availability, crisis support, or care coordination that an internship setting cannot consistently provide

  • Are seeking very structured, short-term, symptom-focused treatment only

  • Feel uncomfortable with the collaborative nature of supervision and training environments

Because intern clinicians are still in training, there may also be moments where the pace of therapy, clinical formulation, or therapeutic style differs from what someone might experience with a senior clinician.

That said, internship work is not “lesser” therapy. Many clients experience ours, and other, intern clinicians as deeply engaged, thoughtful, relational, and highly invested in the work. The added layer of supervision and consultation can also create a strong support structure around the therapeutic process.

Our goal is not to convince everyone this program is the right fit. It’s to help people find the kind of care that feels most supportive, appropriate, and sustainable for them.

Community Care

For us, accessibility is not an afterthought or a separate part of the practice. It is part of our broader commitment to community care, sustainability, and the long-term health of the mental health field, our city, our state, and our world.

We believe people deserve access to care that is thoughtful, relational, and trauma-informed regardless of where they are financially.

We also believe future therapists deserve training environments that support depth, integrity, and humanity in clinical work.

The Accessible Care Initiative was built with both in mind.

We're ready to begin when you are.
